Eating raspberries can improve your fertility

One portion of raspberries provide the same amount of Vitamin C as 173 grapes. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant and antioxidants are really essential for fertility. They protect sperm from oxidative stress in the body and decrease the risk of miscarriage.  According to a study by the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, men over 44 with the highest intake of Vitamin C had 20 per cent less damage to their sperm DNA than men who did not eat those foods.  As well as containing high levels of vitamin C, raspberries also contain high levels of magnesium which help you to absorb minerals in the body better but also helps with the production of testosterone. Raspberries are also a good source of folate, which is known to be essential in key stages of female fertility and early embryo development.

With sperm counts in the average British male falling by almost half in the past 60 years, experts are suggesting that raspberries are an essential part of the diet.  The berries also help to maintain a healthy body weight, which is the key to balancing sex hormones and increasing the likelihood of conceiving.  They have the lowest GI of any fruit, meaning their sugar is absorbed into the body slowly.  This, combined with their high fibre content means raspberries are an effective way to control hunger and cravings at only a few calories.  So while raspberries are in season start getting creative as food really can be tasty as well as healthy.
