Alpha-Lipoic Acid – An Antioxidant To Help Promote Egg Quality

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is naturally produced by the body and can act as both a water-soluble and fat-soluble antioxidant. It’s found in the mitochondria, where it assists in energy production.

ALA is particularly helpful because it helps recycle CoQ10, vitamin C and vitamin E back into their active antioxidant form. It also helps increase the level of another critical antioxidant called glutathione.

When you take alpha-lipoic acid supplements, the total antioxidant level in the bloodstream increases significantly and there is an increase in the activity of the antioxidant enzymes. What’s more, some laboratory studies have found that it can improve egg maturation and embryo viability.

How this molecule works suggests it is helpful across the board whenever egg quality is an issue. That’s because it’s a powerful antioxidant supporting energy production in the mitochondria.

ALA also reduces inflammation and may offer even more significant benefits for those with endometriosis or recurrent miscarriage. Research indicates that inflammation may be one of the critical ways endometriosis causes infertility and unexplained miscarriage. So, reducing inflammation is always a good idea!

Dosage:

Alpha-lipoic acid is typically effective at a dose of 400-600mg a day, although some have used 1200mg per day for PCOS.

If you take a supplement in the form of R-alpha lipoic acid, it’s likely sufficient to take 200-300mg daily.

This is because R-alpha lipoic acid is more biologically active than naturally made in the body.

ALA may be better absorbed on an empty stomach so I recommend taking it 30 minutes before or two hours after eating.
