N-Acetylcysteine (NAC) – A Fertility Supplement You May Not Have Heard of

N-acetylcysteine is an amino acid derivative that combats oxidative damage and boosts the activity of glutathione, another critical antioxidant in the cells.

By acting as an antioxidant and supporting detoxification, NAC improves egg quality by counteracting the effect of ageing and oxidative stress on egg quality.

In one study, women were randomly assigned to take a placebo or N-acetylcysteine while preparing for IVF, in the group taking the supplement, more eggs were retrieved, and the pregnancy rate was much higher (74% vs 50%).

Other studies have found that NAC supplementation restores ovulation, improves egg and embryo quality, increases the chance of pregnancy, and reduces miscarriage rates for those with PCOS who are trying to conceive through IVF.

N-acetylcysteine is widely used by doctors for a variety of conditions. Rarely, allergic reactions have occurred after the use of high doses used to treat painkiller overdoses.

In some people, it can cause nausea, diarrhoea, or abdominal pain. If this happens, just stop taking the supplement right away.

Dosage:

A typical dose of N-acetylcysteine is 600mg per day. In the studies of women with PCOS, 1200mg were taken per day. However, the best thing you can do is to take a regular dosage for a longer period.

In summary:

Oxidative stress can majorly affect ovarian ageing. Also, reactive oxygen molecules must be kept in check by the egg’s natural antioxidants to prevent oxidative damage to eggs.

When this natural antioxidant defence system weakens you can use antioxidant supplements to keep your eggs healthy and protected. I like this brand from Natural Dispensary.
