I’ve written about stress being the arch-enemy of your fertility many times here before. But what I haven’t explored so much is the mechanism for how exactly, this happens, or more importantly how we can counteract it.
Oxytocin, the so-called ‘love’ hormone can make your cortisol level (the main stress hormone) come down.
Oxytocin is the key hormone that stops cortisol in its tracks. It also balances out your insulin levels which leads to better reproductive hormone production.
Getting more oxytocin in your life is really fun and relatively easy to do. You get a dose of Oxytocin every time you do the following things:
- Hug someone
- Chat with your best friend
- Have a laugh
- Spend time with your pets
- Hold a baby
- Tell someone you love them
- Being in a state of gratitude
- Snuggling up to someone
- Having sex
- Doing meditation
- Having a massage
- A deep and meaningful conversation
Or any type of self-care activity that you enjoy doing that fills you with joy and pleasure.
Women need more oxytocin than men. It is such a powerful hormone that it can balance out all the other hormones and so this means it’s wonderful for boosting your fertility.
How is Oxytocin great for your fertility?
Oxytocin has a direct effect on the hypothalamus, which is found in the brain. When oxytocin is around, it tells your brain that you are safe and loved and the crisis is over. The brain responds by ceasing the production of cortisol. Your fertility and your health benefit greatly from these daily doses of oxytocin.
So how can you generate more opportunities for oxytocin production in your daily routines…..? Have fun with this, that’s what it’s all about!
